Mega Evolution: Everything about this Pokémon TCG release

The new Pokémon TCG Series: Mega Evolution is about to release on the 26th of september 2025. This new set introduces powerful Mega Evolution Pokémon cards first seen in the XY series. It features existing and new Mega Evolutions from the new Legends Z-A Pokémon games for Nintendo Switch. The legends Z-A Game releases a bit later on the 16th of October in 2025.

Mega Evolution is a new Pokémon TCG series that releases after the popular Sword & Shield en Scarlet & Violet Series. The new set brings popular Mega Evolutions back into the Trading Card Game (TCG). These cards are illustrated out of beautiful colors and are a must for every collector out there.

What are Pokémon Mega Evolutions?

Pokémon Mega Evolutions are the most powerful evolution of Pokémon. In the TCG, the cards are very powerfull and have HP up until 380 for the Mega Venusaur. Not every Pokémon can mega evolve, only certain Pokémon like Lucario, Gardevoir, Venusaur, Blastoise and Charizard can mega evolve.

Are there new Mega Evolutions?

New Meg Evolutions are released with the new Pokémon Legends Z-A game for Nintendo Switch. So far only Dragonite is known to get a mega evolution yet. It is likely that all new mega evolutions are also featured in the Mega Evolution TCG set.

Mega Evolution Product Line-up

The Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution set is a regular set and this includes the following products:

Boosterpack
Boosterpacks now feature only 10 cards instead of 11. Boosterpacks contain 9 unique cards and either a energy card or a TCG Live code card.

Boosterbox
Boosterboxes contain 36 boosterpacks of the Mega Evolution set. There are 2 types of boosterboxes, one with a box topper promo card and one without. It is recognized by the red label on the front of the boosterbox.

Booster Bundle
Booster bundles contain 6 booster packs of the featured Mega Evolution Set.

Elite Trainer Box
The Mega Evolution Elite Trainer Box exists in two variants: Lucario & Gardevoir. The Elite trainer box contains everything you need to start playing the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

3-Pack Blister
The Mega Evolution 3-pack blisters consist out of 3 booster packs and a promo card featuring Psyduck or Golduck. 

Sleeved Booster Packs
Mega Evolution Sleeved Boosterpacks are the retail version of the normal boosterpacks.

How do Mega Evolution cards work in the Pokémon TCG?


Mega Evolution Pokémon evolve directly from a corresponding base Pokémon-EX (e.g., M Lucario-EX evolves from Lucario-EX). Under classic TCG mechanics, playing a Mega Evolution card immediately ends your turn, forcing you to plan your switch strategically unless negated by specific item cards.

What is a Spirit Link card, and why is it essential?


A Spirit Link is a Pokémon Tool card designed for specific Mega Pokémon (such as Charizard Spirit Link). When attached to the base Pokémon-EX prior to evolving, it bypasses the turn-ending penalty, allowing you to Mega Evolve and attack on the same turn.

Are Mega Evolution cards legal in modern Standard TCG tournaments?


Original Mega Evolution cards from the XY block are rotated out of the Standard competitive format. They remain legal in Expanded and Unlimited tournament formats, as well as unsanctioned casual play.

What base Pokémon is required to play a Mega Evolution card?


You must have the matching base Pokémon-EX actively in play for at least one turn. You cannot evolve a standard, non-EX Pokémon directly into a Mega Evolution (e.g., a standard Rayquaza cannot evolve into M Rayquaza-EX).

What makes Mega Evolution cards so popular among collectors?


Mega Evolution cards are distinct for featuring stylized Japanese Kanji text rendered directly across the English card artwork. High-chase cards like the Secret Rare M Charizard EX prints from XY Flashfire fetch high market values due to their bold textured art and nostalgia.
